The Poker Players Alliance (PPA) testified today before the California Senate Governmental Organization Committee in a hearing appointed to investigate the possibility of licensing and regulating intrastate internet poker.

“The PPA respects the due-diligence of the Committee to investigate “if” online poker can be regulated, and we stand here to tell you that it unquestionably can be regulated, and in fact, already is being regulated, very effectively, across the globe in well-respected jurisdictions. The U.S. Congress is debating federal bills that would establish a licensed and regulated online poker marketplace, which the PPA strongly supports.” said John Pappas, executive director of the PPA, who testified along with PPA’s California State Director Steven J. Miller.

“Given California’s love affair with poker, the PPA and our members feel strongly that if the state decides to go down the path of intra-state licensed and regulated Internet poker it must do it with the long-term needs of the consumer and of the State and California Tribes in mind.” testified Miller.

The PPA made several observations and suggested the Committee to consider the benefits of having an effective intrastate licensing and regulation. Among the requests made by the PPA are: Respect the consumer, ensure competition to eliminate monopolies, increase innovation and incentive consumers, and protect access to the global poker marketplace. For PPA members,  limiting the play to California players will hurt the consumers, and the potential tax revenue for the state of California. If a player can’t find a game online that they want to play, they will simply not play and that means that an opportunity to generate tax revenue is lost.

“A conservative strategy is the favored approach when considering the future of online poker regulation in California. It would be unwise to push “all-in” on an intra-state monopoly that favors a consortium of interests when it is the consumers who ultimately hold the best hand,” concluded Pappas.

Country of Estonia Makes Move to Legalize Online Gambling

Seeing the effects of the recent economic downturn, the small Baltic nation of Estonia is moving towards the legalization of online gambling to generate revenue from taxes. This would be the latest European nation to join Belgium, Sweden, Italy, Poland and Holland that have already legalized online gaming.

The legalization of online gambling in Estonia will allow nationals to wager online via domestic-based platforms like Playtech. This online casino company has already signed a merger with European-based Olympic Entertainment Group to set up shop in Estonia.

“We are truly glad of this opportunity to start our partnership with Olympic as the leading casino entertainment provider in Central and Eastern Europe,” said Mor Weizer, CEO of Playtech.

Aside from online casinos, online poker will also be available for residents to legally play and by the year 2011, the country will allow additional international companies to set up from within the country as long as they meet the nation’s requirements.

A once-economic powerhouse, Estonia has been hit hard be the recent world-wide economic recession. The government is now hopeful that the legalization of online gambling will boost the plummeting economy in an effective manner.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority officials are projecting more visitors to Las Vegas this New Year’s Eve but they say the amount of revenue generated by the New Years will still be down compared to 2008.

LVCVA the non-gaming economic projections for this year will be about $183 million compared to the $199 million generated last year, which represents an 8% decline. The number of visitors expected to travel to Las Vegas could reach 317,000, up from the 312,000 visitors reported in 2008.

“Certainly because of the economy, overall spending by visitors is down for the year, but nonetheless that’s still a significant amount of money coming into our economy,” said Kevin Bagger, LVCVA.

Thousands of tourists and locals are also expected to gather on Las Vegas Strip and Downtown Las Vegas to celebrate the ringing in of 2010. Road closures will start taking place at 5 p.m. in preparation for an impressive New Year’s Eve party prepared for this year, which includes live music on Freemont St, dozens of celebrity hosted parties in almost every single nightclub, and a firework display from several rooftop locations and set to receive the New Year. Private drives re-open and traffic will resume on the Strip at 3:00 am.
