South Africa is the first ever African nation to host the FIFA World Cup.

That’s probably why they are one of the sentimental favorites to win the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

As hosts, they qualified automatically marking their 3^rd appearance overall after making it to France in 1998 and then again in 2002 after being banned from entering qualification from 1966 until 1994.

Despite the automatic qualification, South Africa played World Cup qualifiers mainly because World Cup qualifiers also serve as qualifying for the African Nations Cup.

Unfortunately, South Africa was eliminated from the qualifying. They are, in some way, playing in a World Cup even though they lost in the qualifying stage.

South Africa also played in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. They played well, advancing from the group stage before being eliminated by the No.1 ranked team, Spain, in overtime, 3-2.

South Africa plays Mexico, Uruguay, and France. All three will be tough matches. France is ranked in the top 10, while Mexico and Uruguay are in the top 20. South Africa is ranked 88th.

It has been a turbulent few years for South Africa, but a creditable performance at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, the prelude to this summer, has set expectations high going into their Group A matches.

The official time of the KO is 1:09 of the first round. It’s time for Brazil vs. Brazil, with Vagner Fernandes of Gold Team taking on Andre Gusmao of Ricardo Almeida’s School for Gifted Grapplers. As an aside, Gusmao is also a skilled capoeira practitioner, which enabled him to dominate when he fought in the IFL but availed him naught in his time in the UFC. It doesn’t avail him much here, either, as Fernandes rocks him with a right and proceeds to use his face as a punching bag. Yet Gusmao is tough, and he gains dominate position on the ground, flattens Fernandes out, and drops the hammer until the ref steps in at 3:25 of Round 1.

Ryan’s love for the game of poker began while he was in college and he grew to be an excellent online ring-game player in short time. One of the highlights of Ryan’s poker career was his smooth transition from online play to live tournament play. At the age of 22, he worked his way through 937 players to take home the WPT $7.8K No-Limit Hold’em Championship title in 2007, his best tournament showing to date.

2007 and 2008 have proven to be the most profitable for Ryan, having made the final table of the WPT $15K Doyle Brunson Classic and cashing in four times at the WSOP.

When he is not playing poker, Ryan enjoys sports as a fan and a participant. He enjoys football, baseball and tennis. Ryan is also quite active in martial arts such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
