The Portland Trail Blazers drafting Greg Oden should be considered as a complete bust right about nowWhy? Yeah, you guessed it, he is injured again.

The Portland Trail Blazers would have to once again do without their prized center Greg Oden this 2009 NBA basketball season.

Yes, Greg Oden suffered yet another season-ending injury after he broke his left kneecap against the Houston Rockets a few days ago. The No.1 overall draft pick in 2007, Oden is out once again and now have some eery similarities with Sam Bowie, the often-injured big man the Blazers selected ahead of Michael Jordan in the 1984 draft.

Oden underwent surgery on his left patella and the Portland Trail Blazers confirmed what they feared all along that he was done for the season. Oden, drafted ahead of Kevin Durant, has been plagued by injures in the three seasons he had in the NBA.

greg_odenHe already missed his rookie season after undergoing microfracture surgery on his right knee. Last season, he sat out six games after injuring his right foot in the season opener against the Lakers, before missing 14 games after the All-Star break with a bone chip in his left knee. He finished the season averaging 8.9 points and 7 rebounds.

This season, Oden lost weight and was averaging 11.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.4 blocks as a starter. Along with improved numbers in all the major statistical categories, Oden had a renewed confidence that was seldom evident in his delayed rookie season, when he admitted the pressure of being a top draft pick got to him.

Then this happened. The Blazers sure have not…

Another 0-16 season for Detroit Lions with these picks?

seth-edward-oneal.jpgDetroit fans are really having some tough times these days.

Merely hours after the Pistons were swept by the Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs, the Lions made their picks in the 2009 NFL Draft and unfortunately for them, Detroit wasn’t happy about the picks their team made.

After the embarrassing 0-16 campaign the Detroit Lions had last year, their fans were really looking forward to see their team address some of the issues that equated to such a disappointing 2008 season.

Detroit LionsThe Lions had their chance over the weekend with the NFL Draft and while they may have gotten rid of the leaks, they’ve still got some huge holes to fill heading to the new 2009 NFL football season.

Once again, the Lions made some questionable picks over the weekend. You see, this team is known for making questionable draft picks with Matt Millen’s eight-year run of disastrous drafts but with the way they limped through the season last year, their fans were expecting something better.

Unfortunately, just like the last eight draft nights…

How the Buffalo Bills Should Play the Draft

The 2008 season started out with a bang for the Buffalo Bills. By the time week 7 arrived the Bills were looking at an impressive 5 win-1 loss record and many were starting to speculate that the team had nowhere else to go but up. Then came week 8 and a face off against their arch rivals, the Miami Dolphins. Buffalo would lose that game and go on to lose 7 of the remaining 9 games on the schedule. In the blink of an eye the Bills were soon looking at the bitter losing end of what started out as a promising season.

Looking back on the season it is easy to see where the team began to unravel. Week 8 wiped out 3 key players in one fell swoop. Leading Defensive End Aaron Schobel was pronounced out for the season with a foot injury. Following in his footsteps were Offensive Lineman Brad Butler out with a knee injury and John DiGiorgio out with a knee injury. And so the 2008 downward spiral of a dismal season began for the Buffalo Bills.

Now Buffalo has the chance to regroup, refocus and start the 2009 season strong. It begins with resuscitating the pass rushing game. Buffalo was hit hard with the season ending injury to Defensive End Aaron Achobel. One guy out left a gaping hole in the defensive line. There was no one left standing to apply pressure to the quarterback or stop the opposing offensive line.

The 2009 NFL Draft should start off with taking a Defensive End. Not just any defensive end will fit the bill. It has to be someone who is going to come out of the starting gate with a taste for quarterback blood. It has to be someone that will be the missing added element to the Bills passing game.

Such a player can be found in Everrette Brown of FSU; Robert Ayers of Tennessee or Aaron Maybin of Penn State. Buffalo would do well to take Everrette Brown as their round one 11th spot choice. He has the agility and the natural ability to get the job done and fill the gap for a not fully recovered Aaron Schobel.

Next up Buffalo needs to take a look at a quality Tight End player as a viable second or third round draft selection. The need is a player who can help quarterback Trent Edwards strengthen on-field performance. He must posses a down field pass-catching ability and complements the recent addition of wide receiver Terrell Owens and veteran player Lee Evans.

Look no further than Brandon Pettigrew from Oklahoma State. He will bring solid blocker ability to the running game and provide Edwards with a third strong target to bring the ball into the end zone.

Once pass rush help has been granted and a tight end selected, Buffalo must turn towards the positions of Outside Linebacker, Center and Free Safety.

Outside Linebacker selection should be tough and versatile by going after the opposing quarterback and offensive line with a vengeance. For this Buffalo needs to take Ashlee Palmer of Ole Miss.

The selection of Center should be a player who will be the missing link in creating that unstoppable offensive line that Buffalo has fallen short of developing in years past. Look to Alex Mack of California to be that perfect fit to enhance the running game.

Rounding out a successful draft will be filling the position of free safety. The right choice here can solidify Buffalo’s quest to own one of the top secondary units in the league. With a solid secondary, Buffalo gains the ability to effectively break down some of the fastest AFC opponent running games. A top consideration is Darcel McBath of Texas Tech.

Keys to the Draft:
Buffalo should not trade that first round 11th slot pick for anything. They are in dire need of a quality pass rush defensive player or tight end. Each year this is a need for the team and each year they seem to fall short of the goal. Making a slot change with another team may result in solid, quality players in these two positions disappearing before the Bills know what hit them.

Making these picks along with a tailback to fill Marshawn Lynch’s slot during his recent 3 game suspensions should give the Bills the power and strength needed to stay on top of the game for the entire 2009 NFL season.
